Be Careful During Group Rides and Centuries – The most dangerous place to try to draft people is during an unfamiliar group ride or a cycling event, such as a century. Here, cyclists aren’t always cooperating. In fact, in some cases, they’re actually competing in almost a no-holds-barred fashion. So beware and ride defensively in these situations by leaving yourself an out. You might want to hang near the back where you can keep an eye peeled for trouble. Or, if you’re good in a group, you might choose to stay near the front so that you’re ahead of most of the bunch and can find an escape route forward should something happen. Watch for signs of tired riders (inability to ride a straight line; frequent changes in pace; labored breathing) who may cause a crash and steer clear of them, too.
